SAIL Recruitment Process and Policy
Recruitment at Steel Authority of India Limited is an ongoing process. The company continues headhunting with short intervals in order to acquire new talent and skilled individuals. SAIL also recruits employees through GATE exam.
The hiring process involves following four stages:
- Written Test
- Group Discussion
- Technical Assessment Interview
- HR Interview
Candidate must have an engineering degree with at least 55% marks. For technical and engineering related jobs, candidates should have a degree in Electrical, Metallurgy, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
Applicants also must meet certain physical standards such as:

Time allowed for the written exam is 150 minutes with a rule of 1/4 negative marking.
GATE General Aptitude Test Section:
The Aptitude section contains general knowledge and mathematical questions. In order to prepare for the test, you should study general questions related to general math, algebra, geometry, time, speed, velocity, profit and loss etc. Also consider preparing for logics and current affairs. Aptitude test is not very difficult however do necessary preparation in order to avoid failure.
This section is totally about measuring candidate’s engineering knowledge and skills. Questions come from different fields of engineering such as Mechanical, civil, electrical and chemical engineering. About Steel Authority of India Limited
SAIL is one of the largest steel and iron production companies in India. In addition, it is also one of the ten Central Public Sector Maharatnas in India. Company is a government based steel manufacturing enterprise headquartered in New Delhi. It works under the Steel Ministry of Indian government. Steel Authority of India secured an annual turnover of INR 66,267 Crores equivalent to USD 9.32 Billion for the year 2018-19.
The enterprise was founded on January 24 1973. In 2021 so far, the company has more than 65,000 working employees. Producing 16.3 million metric ton steel, SAIL is not only the largest steel producer in India but also in the world. With the continually increasing growth, company’s Hot Metal production capacity is expected to hit 50 million tones per year by 2025. Current chairman of SAIL is Soma Mondal.
SAIL owns five iron and steel producing plants situated at Bhilai, Bokaro, Burnpur IISCO, Durgapur and Rourkela. It also operates another three special steel plants at Durgapur, Bhadravathi and Salem. The company owns a Ferro Alloy plant at Chandrapur as well. SAIL is also one of the fastest growing state-owned enterprises across the country. Company has a Research and Development center known as RDCIS, situated in Ranchi, Jharkhand.
SAIL was initially HSL (Hindustan Steel Limited) founded on January 19th, 1954. HSL was supposed to operate a single steel plant at Rourkela. Later on, The Iron and Steel Ministry started working on Bhilai and Durgapur plants. In April 1957, these two plants were moved under HSL and then Hindustan Steel was operating three plants in total. It was first based in New Delhi. Later in July 1956, it moved to Calcutta and then to Ranchi in December 1959.
Another steel enterprise known as Bokaro Steel Limited was originated on January 29, 1975. It was founded to operate the steel plant at Bokaro. By the end of year 1961, Bhilai and Rourkela Steel Plants had completed the phase of 1 MT steel production. Similarly, 1 MT production phase of Durgapur Steel Plant was completed in January 1962. The production work kept progressing and finally the combination of five integrated and some special plants entailed the foundation of SAIL in the year 1973.
